Education pay reform triggers teachers’ strikes across China
Attempts by local governments in China to change the way high school teachers are paid have resulted in an upsurge in strikes and protests by teachers over the last two months. Report claims coal mine deaths in China fell by one third in 2012
Citing a State Administration of Work Safety circular, a Chinese media report yesterday claimed that the death rate in China’s coal mines fell by one third in 2012 to stand at 0.374 deaths per million tons of coal production, the first time the rate had fallen below 0.5 deaths per million tons. However, China’s coal mine death rate is still more than ten times higher than the rate for developed countries of around 0.02 deaths per million tons of coal production on average.

Teacher with HIV receives 45,000 yuan in employment discrimination case
A teacher in the eastern Chinese city of Nanchang has accepted 45,000 yuan in compensation after filing a lawsuit against his local education department for employment discrimination. Xiao Qi (a pseudonym) had been refused employment by the Jinxian county education department because he was HIV positive.

Striking Chinese bus drivers in Singapore to face trial on 4 March
Four Chinese bus drivers will stand trial in Singapore on 4 March accused of staging an illegal strike last November. The four bus drivers had been detained on 29 November 2012 and charged under article 10(a) of the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act. They were later released on bail.
