Sharp increase in wage arrears leads to spike in worker protests in October

IN April of this year, a group of Chinese workers, frustrated and angry at their employer’s long-standing refusal to pay their pension contributions, stormed into their manager’s office and demanded payment. The manager prevaricated and made empty promises. When he realized the workers were not going away, he called the police and had the ringleaders arrested for imprisoning him in his office.

The man who revealed the deaths of five homeless children in a bin this week, sparking soul-searching across China, has been taken away by officials, his supporters have said. The boys, who were found dead in the south-western province of Guizhou, were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, apparently after lighting charcoal in an attempt to stay warm overnight.

At least 39 dead in two southwest China coal mine disasters

A gas explosion at a coal mine in the south-western province of Guizhou has killed 22 miners, with one still in a critical condition. The explosion at the Xiangshui mine in the coal-rich district of Liupanshui occurred on the morning of 24 November and instantly killed 18 of the 28 miners underground at the time.
