Migrant worker happiness index puts Pearl River delta towns at bottom of list

Migrant workers are a lot happier working in relatively smaller cities away from China’s traditional factory to the world, the Pearl River delta, according to a new study conducted by the People’s University of China (中国人民大学).

Migrant worker wages increase by 21 percent

China’s rural migrant workers got an average pay increase of around 21 percent last year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on 29 April. The average monthly wage for the estimated 159 million rural migrant workers employed away from their home area increased by 359 yuan to reach 2,049 yuan

Pay disputes and factory relocations the focus of strike action in April

After an upsurge in strike action last month, generated in part by transport workers’ dissatisfaction over the cost of fuel, the focus of labour activism returned to the factory floor in April, particularly in those factories that were planning to downsize or relocate. China Labour Bulletin recorded a total of 30 strikes in April, down eight from a month ago. Strikes in the manufacturing sector however rose 17 percent from March to 20 cases in April.

Wen Jiabao shows he is in touch with China’s workers - almost

Every year on Labour Day, China’s leaders make a big show of thanking the country’s workers for their endeavours and their contributions to the national economy. It is a well-rehearsed and rather tired publicity stunt not normally worthy of comment but this year Premier Wen Jiabao did something a bit more interesting. He visited bus crews and sanitation workers, two groups of workers who have been at the forefront of labour activism over the last few years.

Protesting workers released after 25 days in detention still face possible criminal charges

Two workers were held in police detention for 26 days for allegedly imprisoning their factory manager in a dispute over unpaid pension contributions. They were eventually released on 29 April but the police have refused to say if the workers will be charged or not.
