What lies behind trade union “success stories?”
In late April, some 450,000 catering workers in Wuhan welcomed the signing of a collective agreement that promised them a basic wage 30 percent higher than the municipal minimum wage (currently 900 yuan), and a wage increase this year of at least nine percent on average.
But soon after the Labour Day celebrations died down, experts started questioning if this agreement is really that promising, even though it does involves the largest number of workers covered in one agreement and a big increase in pay.

Two coal mine accidents in one day - 15 miners dead
Two separate explosions at coal mines in Yunnan and Hunan on 17 May killed 15 miners, according to Chinese media reports. The first explosion, which killed at least eight miners, occurred on Tuesday morning at the Golden Bamboo Mountain mine in Hunan. There were reportedly 14 miners underground at the time. Less than 12 hours later, a gas and coal dust explosion at the Nanfeng mine in Yunnan killed seven miners

Hei Pern's new job as a translator for an oil company seemed like just the career move he was looking for. It offered Mr Hei, 22, an English literature graduate, originally from China's Ningxia region, a reasonable salary of $1,000 (Dh3,673) a month and the chance to travel overseas, something he had never done before. Now, little more than three months since he started his job with such enthusiasm, the Beijing-based Mr Hei is unemployed and struggling for money, having quit after not receiving his promised pay.
