Old Gold & Black: Chinese labor rights activist addresses conditions of workers

Look at the tag on the back of your shirt or in your shoes and chances are, you will most likely see the line, “Made in China.” Behind this simple acknowledgement occupies a realm of issues related to Chinese manufacturing and in particular, the rights of Chinese workers within industry.  Han Dongfang, a Chinese labor rights activist, addressed students and faculty on these issues  April 9 in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library.

Why it is important to remember Sun Zhigang

Ten years ago, a young migrant worker, Sun Zhigang, was brutally beaten to death whilst in police custody in Guangzhou. When the incident was reported by the Southern Metropolitan Daily at the end of April 2003, it caused a national outrage and mounting public pressure forced the newly installed government in Beijing to quickly dismantle regulations controlling the movement of migrant workers in an attempt to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.

Time to Pay the Bill: China's obligation to the victims of pneumoconiosis

Two decades of unchecked economic growth has produced an occupational disease crisis in China that requires urgent action from the government. An estimated six million workers in China, predominately poor migrants from the countryside, have already contracted the debilitating and deadly lung disease, pneumoconiosis. It has ruined their lives and left their families impoverished and mired in debt. Whole communities in remote parts of China have been devastated by this entirely preventable disease but, as yet, the central government in Beijing has done little to help.

Strikes and worker protests in China’s service sector on the increase

More than half the strikes and worker protests recorded by CLB last month occurred in the service sector, with protests by transport workers being particularly prevalent. A total of 45 protests were recorded on CLB’s strike map in April, about the same level as in March. There were 27 incidents in the service sector and 17 of those were in transport.
