Hebei Mine Blasts Kill 27
28 January 2002 Twenty-seven people were reportedly killed, 12 wounded and one went missing in two gas blasts in Nuanerhe Mine, Chengde County, Hebei Province.
The first explosion occurred on 26 January, 2002 and killed all 19 miners working in the shaft. The rescue team only found 18 bodies and a day later another 25 miners were sent down to look for the one remaining body. While the rescue team was in the shaft, a second blast occurred killing eight people and wounding 12. One person went missing. The mine is a local state-operated unit.
