24 Miners dead after a blast in Yunnan Province

26 May 2003
25 May 2003

An explosion at the Jizuo coal mine in Yunnan Province on 21 May has killed at least 24 miners.

Reports have come out which suggest that the explosion was caused by management negligence in not installing proper ventilation shafts despite government orders to do so. The explosion was due to a build up of gas in the mine shaft which could have been avoided had ventilation shafts been installed.

It is not known if any official action has been taken against the mine management.
