27 Coal Miners Killed and Families Held in Isolation in Jilin Province
On December 6, 2002, a fire ripped through an illegal single-shaft coal mine in the northeastern province of Jilin, trapping 30 miners underground. As of December 9, 27 bodies had been recovered.
Instead of assisting the victims' families to seek compensation, the local branch of ACFTU joined the operation of isolating them in order to stave off any collective actions for fair compensation. CLB has released a press statement condemning the abhorrent behaviour.
