Two Coalmine Blasts in a Row, Shanxi

It has been confirmed by Shanxi Coalmine Safety Supervision Bureau that 11 coalmine workers were trapped in a coalmine explosion on the 6 July. A second explosion took place during yesterday’s rescue, but no one was injured.

The explosion happened at He Jin Xiao Wan coalmine in Shanxi on 6 July early at 10 am. Wang, the deputy of Shanxi Coalmine Safety Supervision Bureau confirmed the number of workers trapped in the coalmine: there were 121 workers working down in the coalmine, 95 of whom escaped in time, five were rescued. 11 are still missing while ten bodies were found so far.

The second explosion occurred yesterday during the rescue. 49 rescue team members escaped in time, but 20 members were injured, with three severely wounded. The reason for the second explosion, which happened on 7 July at 11am, was mainly due to the heavy gas and carbon monoxide inside the coalmine, according to Wang.
The official from Shanxi Coalmine Safety Supervision Bureau said they are still investigating the case, the representatives and the head of the coalmine were already in police custody, but the deputy head of the coalmine has escaped.
