Seventeen miners believed to be dead after a coal flood

Seventeen miners were believed to be dead after a coal mine flooded on 4 March in an unlicensed mine in Leiyang city, in Hunan province.

According to the news report; "Rescue work is going on but the miners' chances of survival are very slim, " said Hu Guanyou, a local government official.

The report gave statistics from the State Bureau for Safety in the Workplace showing there were 13,960 accidents in China's mines in 2002, which resulted in 14,924 deaths.
