Hubei Coal Mine Fumes Kill Seven

According to the Xinhuanet (24 February, 2002), seven workers were killed by toxic fumes in a small coal mine in the central province of Hubei.

The accident took place on 21 February, 2002, the first day the Guinian Coal Mine re-opened after the Chinese New Year break. The mine, in Jinghai Development District of Yangxing county, was one of the nine coal mines which were certified as legal operators. Last year the government closed down over 100 small coal mines in the district after reports of numerous accidents.
