Explosions at Donghai coal mine kills 24 miners and another explosion at a mine in Didao kills at least seven miners.

Two explosions in colamines killed at least 31 miners in the same area on 8 April 2002.

The explosions come just before the Chinese government announced its plans to close 3o% of its small coal mines in 2003 in a bid to cut ccoal mining deaths by 10%.

According to reports by Xinhua, a blast occured on 8 April 2003 at the Donnghai Coal Mine in Jixi city,Heilongjiang Province killing least 24 miners.

Another blast took place at the nearby No. 3 Didao district coal mine killing at least seven miners and leaving four mroe missing. It is not known what the final death toll was.

A gas explosion at another mine in Jixi in February 2001 killed 35 miners.


Accoridng to the China Daily, the Chinese authorities have shut down 12,257 small mines since last May both to improve safety and to cut a glut of coal production.
